Our Patients

Pharma-Script strives to ensure our patients have access to medications prepared in an environment designed to deliver optimum accuracy, and that they receive a higher level of personalized care. Before filling a prescription, we take the time to understand each patient’s unique needs, and address all questions and concerns regarding their medications, potential side effects, and supplies necessary to administer the drugs safely.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract contains harmless bacteria which aids in digestion. In people with IBD, the immune system mistakenly identifies the bacteria as harmful resulting in chronic inflammation, ulceration, and thickening of the intestinal wall.

The two primary types of IBD are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis. Crohn’s disease usually affects the end of the small bowel and the beginning of the colon. Ulcerative colitis affects the colon or large intestine. Symptoms vary but often include persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps and pain, and constipation which can lead to bowel obstruction. PharmaScript offers patients whose IBD has responded inadequately to conventional medications customized drug therapy to help:

  • Relieve symptoms caused by flare-ups
  • Achieve remission-or earlier remission when possible
  • Reduce or eliminate the need for steroids
  • Drug therapies available: Simponi, Remicade, Stelara, Entyvio.

Short Bowel Syndrome

Adults have approximately 20 feet of small intestine. Those with short bowel syndrome usually have at least half of their small intestine missing or removed, resulting in the body being unable to absorb enough nutrients from food. Portions of the small intestine may have been surgically removed due to Crohn’s disease, cancer, traumatic injuries or blood clots in the arteries, or portions may have been missing or damaged at birth.

PharmaScript offers customized total parenteral nutrition (TPN) to help provide the nutrients and vitamins the body needs to reduce the risks of anemia, gallstones, kidney stones, and bone pain or osteoporosis that may occur as a result of SBS.

Asthma and Allergy

Asthma is a chronic disease which causes inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) that let the air move in and out of your lungs. When the air flow is restricted it triggers symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Drug therapies available: Xolair, Nucala, Fasenra and Tezspire.

Organ Transplant

The body’s immune system recognizes a transplanted organ as a foreign mass that was not originally a part of the body, and triggers an automatic response to damage or destroy it. To decrease the body’s reaction to the foreign organ, most transplant patients are prescribed immunosuppressant drugs. Immunosuppressant drugs weaken the immune system, which decreases the body’s ability to attack the organ. There are 2 types of immunosuppressant drugs: induction drugs are prescribed at the time of transplant to help prevent rejection and maintenance drugs are long term anti-rejections. The goal is to establish the proper drug balance that prevents rejection, and minimizes side effects experienced by the patient.

PharmaScript has an onsite compounding lab that allows us to develop customized drug therapies to meet the individual needs of each patient. Our lead pharmacist has over 20 years of experience treating adult and pediatric solid organ transplant recipients including heart, kidney, and lung; significant experience caring for stem cell transplant patients; and is a member of the Illinois Transplant Pharmacy Association. Drug therapies available: Gammaplex, Gamunex – C , Flebogamma DIF, Hizentra, Gammagard Liquid, Gammagard S/D , Octagam, Gammaked, and Privigen.

Osteoarthritis / Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the two most common types of arthritis, a condition that damages joints and nearby tissues, and affects their function. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which some immune system cells malfunction and start to attack healthy tissues, primarily in the joints. This damages the joint lining causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect the middle joints of the fingers and the joints where the fingers attach to the hand; the same joints are often affected on both sides of the body. It may also affect the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood, and nerves. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease in which the cushions on the ends of the bones in the joint get thin or wear off, and the bones can rub against each other causing pain.

Osteoarthritis more commonly affects the joints at the ends of the fingers and at the base of the thumb, and the joints in the knees, hips and spine. Symmetry does not typically occur in osteoarthritis, only one hand or knee may be painful, and osteoarthritis often gradually worsens.Early diagnosis and the onset of medical treatment often slows the progression of arthritis, helps to improve pain and joint function, and allows patients to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. PharmaScript works with the medical team to develop a customized infusion drug therapy regimen that adjusts to the patient’s activity level and long term health goals. Drug therapies available: Orencia. Remicade, Rituxan, Simponi. Simponi Aria.
